The O.R. Tambo District Municipality hosted a vibrant half-marathon today, drawing runners from across the region. The race started at the District’s Myezo offices and ended at Walter Sisulu University’s Nelson Mandela Campus. Hundreds turned out to cheer, creating a festive atmosphere from start to finish.
What Happened
Runners lined up early as excitement built along the Mthatha route. The event featured 5km, 10km, and 21km races, each attracting a mix of seasoned athletes and enthusiastic first-timers.
Spectators filled the sidewalks, urging participants forward as they pushed through the rolling route toward the WSU campus finish line.
“It felt electric out there. The community carried us,” said local runner Bulelwa M., who completed the 21km race.
Official Response
Municipal officials praised the strong turnout and seamless coordination.
“This race strengthens our commitment to health, wellness, and active living,” said an O.R. Tambo District spokesperson. “We are proud of every participant who showed up with determination and pride.”
Organizers also mentioned the safe and orderly execution of the event, noting the smooth collaboration between municipal teams, volunteers, and university staff.
Community Impact
Residents celebrated the marathon as more than a sporting event. It brought families outdoors, encouraged young people to stay active, and strengthened community ties.
Local vendors also benefited from steady foot traffic along the route.
