OR Tambo District Municipality, in partnership with Ingquza Hill Local Municipality, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, and the Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency, hosted a Marine Day celebration at Mbotyi Primary School in Lusikisiki on 12 November 2025. The event aimed to raise awareness about marine biodiversity conservation while introducing learners to career paths in the ocean economy.
What Happened
The Marine Day celebration brought together local leaders, environmental experts, learners, and institutions, including Walter Sisulu University. Through interactive exhibitions and demonstrations, learners engaged directly with professionals in the marine and coastal sectors, gaining valuable insight into ocean-related careers and the importance of protecting natural resources.
Traditional leaders also attended the event, emphasizing the shared responsibility of preserving coastal environments for future generations.
Official Response
Officials outlined the importance of youth participation in protecting marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable use of ocean resources. They commended the efforts of Mbotyi’s lifeguards, who were recognized for their dedication and commitment to beach safety.
During the event, OR Tambo District Municipality handed over additional lifeguard equipment to support their continued work in ensuring the safety of beachgoers.
“Our lifeguards go beyond the call of duty to protect lives, and this gesture is our way of strengthening their capacity,” said an OR Tambo District representative.
Community Impact
The initiative not only raised environmental awareness but also inspired learners to consider future careers in the growing ocean economy. By involving local institutions and traditional leadership, the event strengthened partnerships for coastal conservation and community development in Lusikisiki.
