The Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Dr Namane Dickson Masemola, attended the Provincial Political MuniMEC Forum at Alex Golf Country Club in East London on 11 November 2025.
The two-day forum unites government leaders to address service delivery challenges and chart a new course for municipalities across the Eastern Cape.
What Happened
The Provincial Political MuniMEC Forum serves as a key intergovernmental platform. It brings together MECs, Executive Mayors, Mayors, Municipal Managers, and senior officials from critical departments such as Water and Sanitation, Energy, Human Settlements, and Public Works.
The meeting focuses on solving pressing issues affecting local government performance. Its main goals include creating a more coordinated government, ensuring efficient service delivery, and fulfilling national development priorities.
Official Response
Deputy Minister Masemola emphasized the importance of collaboration between spheres of government. He also stressed the ongoing review of the White Paper on Local Government, which will redefine the structure and role of municipalities.
According to Dr Masemola, this review is “a necessary step toward building responsive, sustainable, and accountable local governance.”
