In the early hours of Sunday morning at Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, twenty-one teenagers, aged between 13 to 18, died suddenly, Around 4 am, the police from the scenery park police station received a report about the death of teenagers. When they arrived, they discovered 17 bodies inside the venue. It was eventually determined that two extra victims died, one died on the way the other died at the hospital.
The youngest victim who died inside the packed venue was 13-years-old. According to those who were at the venue, the establishment was chaotic and overcrowded to a point that the youngsters overpowered the bouncers at the entrance.
Mr. Matinise, the owner of the tavern, stated that he was only contacted when the teenagers were attempting to force their way inside and the bouncers were losing control of them. The owner allegedly used a paper spray and shut the door to retake control of the situation when he arrived, which is when the suffocation allegedly began. The venue is still under police supervision. The Eastern Cape Liquor Board says it will lay criminal charges against the owner of the Enyobeni tavern at Scenery Park in the Eastern Cape.
