On 10 October 2025, the Elundini Local Municipality held a Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) awareness campaign at Sethathi Village in Tlokoeng. The campaign formed part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to combat rising incidents of gender-based violence within the Joe Gqabi District.
What Happened
Community members, traditional leaders, and youth organisations attended the event.
Speakers from government departments and local NGOs urged residents to report abuse and support victims. The session focused on prevention, early reporting, and building safer homes and schools.
Official Response
Municipal officials said the campaign was designed to educate residents about legal rights and available support services. They encouraged survivors to use police hotlines, local clinics, and social workers for help. “GBV destroys families and weakens communities. We must work together to stop it,” said one municipal representative.
The municipality reaffirmed its commitment to continue holding awareness drives across all wards.
Community Impact
Residents welcomed the initiative, saying it helped break the silence around abuse. Youth participants called for more dialogues in schools and churches to teach respect and equality. As a result, the campaign strengthened local partnerships in the fight against GBVF.
