On the 30th of September 2025, Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Peace Mabe conducted a walkabout at the Mthatha Community Arts Centre, the first of its kind to be established in the Eastern Cape. Located just outside the city centre along the N2 towards Durban, the centre has become a vital space for local artists.
What Happened
The Deputy Minister toured the facility to assess its infrastructure and functionality. The centre, which remains fully operational, provides a hub for cultural expression and development in Mthatha and surrounding areas.
Led by an elected management structure, the Mthatha Community Arts Centre operates daily and hosts various activities to promote arts, culture, and community engagement. It is one of several centres across the country supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
Official Response
Deputy Minister Peace Mabe praised the centre for its resilience and contribution to local cultural life. “This centre stands as a symbol of the Eastern Cape’s creativity and talent. It is important that we continue to invest in such spaces where artists can grow and communities can unite through culture,” she said.
Officials from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture reaffirmed their support for the centre, noting that community-led governance has played a major role in ensuring the facility remains vibrant and accessible.
Community Impact
For local artists and cultural groups, the centre represents opportunity, training, and visibility. It provides space for performances, exhibitions, and workshops, creating a platform for emerging talent while strengthening cultural identity in the region.
Residents of Mthatha and neighbouring communities see the centre as more than just a building, it is a gathering place where heritage and modern creativity meet.
