On 24 September 2025, the Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe used her keynote address at the Heritage Day celebration in Gqeberha to call for unity, describing the event as a powerful reflection of togetherness and community pride.

Residents of Ward 41, Joe Slovo in Gqeberha gathered to celebrate Heritage Day with vibrant cultural displays, music, and speeches. The day also shone a spotlight on local talent, including Sanelisiwe Charlie, who recently represented South Africa in the Springbok Women’s rugby team. Her recognition added a sporting show to the cultural programme.

Mayor Lobishe applauded Charlie’s achievement, saying her success symbolises inspiration and progress for young women. “She has shown that excellence has no limits. Sanelisiwe is not just a rugby player, she is a beacon of hope for those who dare to dream beyond barriers,” the Mayor said.
She further urged the community to embrace collective strength, adding: “When we come together as one, we are unstoppable. Unity is our greatest heritage.”
