The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have strongly criticised the indefinite suspension of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption of Law Enforcement, which was supposed to begin hearings on 1 September 2025.
What Was the Commission About?
The Commission, chaired by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, was established to investigate:
- Alleged capture of law enforcement agencies by criminal networks
- Political interference in policing
- Corruption in the justice systemIt was expected to sit in Pretoria and deliver an interim report within three months.
Why Was It Suspended?
In a notice this week, the Commission said it could not proceed because the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development failed to provide the infrastructure and resources required — despite earlier commitments.
The EFF says this proves there was never a genuine intention to let the inquiry function independently.
EFF’s Reaction
In its statement, the EFF called the suspension:
- A political ploy by President Cyril Ramaphosa to ease public anger, without real accountability.
- A cover-up to protect Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who the party claims is implicated in criminal networks and drug syndicates.
- A betrayal of South Africans, leaving crime and corruption unchecked.The EFF went further, accusing Ramaphosa of shielding his “close political ally” and reminded the public that Mchunu continues to enjoy the full benefits of being a Minister of Police.
What the EFF Demands
- The removal of Senzo Mchunu from Cabinet to protect taxpayers.
- That Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, set to begin work in September, will continue probing the issues without relying on the Department of Justice.
- That Justice Madlanga should resign, arguing that his participation in a “disgraced and fake process” will damage his legal legacy.
