Motorists across South Africa will feel the pinch this week as fuel prices are set to rise significantly from Wednesday, 7 August 2025, according to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.

Below is a breakdown of the expected changes:

1. Inland Fuel Prices (e.g. Gauteng):

  • Petrol 95: R24.33 per litre (▲ 75c)
  • Petrol 93: R24.05 per litre (▲ 75c)
  • Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): R22.06 per litre (▲ 67c)
  • Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): R22.26 per litre (▲ 63c)

2. Coastal Fuel Prices (e.g. Durban, Port Elizabeth):

  • Petrol 95: R23.61 per litre
  • Petrol 93: R23.49 per litre
  • Diesel 0.05%: R21.34 per litre
  • Diesel 0.005%: R21.54 per litre

3. Why Are Fuel Prices Increasing in August?

The price hikes are driven by:

  • Weaker Rand: The average exchange rate fell to R18.36 against the US dollar.
  • Higher international oil prices: Rising crude prices and supply constraints pushed up costs.
  • Global shipping and distribution pressures.

4. What This Means for Consumers:

  • Increased transport costs could raise food and goods prices.
  • Taxis and delivery services may review their fares.
  • Long-distance travel will become more expensive.

5. Tips to Save on Fuel:

  • Carpool whenever possible.
  • Keep tyres inflated to recommended pressure.
  • Avoid idling or sudden acceleration.
  • Use loyalty or rewards programs at fuel stations.
