The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has issued a traffic advisory announcing that a blasting operation will take place on the N2 between Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff on Wednesday, 26 March 2025, at approximately 11:00 AM.
The operation will necessitate a temporary closure of the N2 for up to 30 minutes to ensure public safety during the blast. The affected area is approximately 1.9 km from Mount Frere, in the direction of Mount Ayliff.
Alternative Routes Recommended
Motorists travelling between Kokstad and Mthatha are advised to consider alternative routes:
- Route 1: Exit the N2 at Matatiele and travel towards Mount Fletcher.
- Route 2: Use the Flagstaff and Lusikisiki route via the R61 to Port St Johns, rejoining the N2 in Mthatha.
The shortest alternative route is approximately 69 kilometres longer than the direct path and may result in travel delays of around 50 minutes.
“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly, to consider alternative routes and to use caution when making use of the road,” said Andrew Van Gruting, SANRAL’s Acting Provincial Head for the Eastern Cape.
SANRAL apologised for any inconvenience caused and urged the public to stay informed about road conditions.
