Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Zolile Williams, has placed Headman Avela Njuqwana of Tsholora Administrative area on precautionary suspension with immediate effect. This decision follows a disturbing video that surfaced on social media, showing Njuqwana allegedly assaulting two elderly women.
“The video is viewed in a serious light, and we will leave no stone unturned until justice is served for the two elderly women,” said MEC Williams. The suspension is pending a full investigation into the allegations.
According to the Department of COGTA, the suspension is empowered by Section 32 of the Traditional Leadership and Governance Act of 2017. This section allows for the placement of a Traditional Leader on precautionary suspension if they have allegedly violated the Code of Conduct for Traditional Leaders.
MEC Williams expressed appreciation for the swift intervention of Chief Bambilizwe Sigcawu and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in arresting the perpetrator. The Department of COGTA has initiated due process to effect the suspension.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for swift action against the perpetrator. The suspension of Headman Njuqwana is seen as a positive step towards addressing the allegations and ensuring justice for the victims.
