A football match between arch-rivals Sinenkani FC and FC Ravens ended in chaos at Mafumbatha Stadium on Saturday in Bizana. The eruption began after the final whistle when Sinenkani fans expressed their dissatisfaction towards match officials, claiming they were unfairly treated by the referees.
The situation quickly escalated, with hurtful objects being thrown towards the officials, resulting in injuries to an assistant referee and the Sinenkani FC manager. Stadium furniture was damaged, and people stormed the field. Police officers were forced to use tear gas to restore order.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for an end to the violence and hostility that has become synonymous with the Bizana derby.
Siwe Ncamani, a Sinenkani fan, took to Facebook to express his disappointment and frustration. “I am a Snenkani fan, but I’m not saying what they did was justified. When there’s a derby, we’re only enemies on the pitch, but when the game ends, we should be friends again. Fans are spreading too much hostility, and it needs to end seriously.”
Ncamani also emphasized the need for discipline and sportsmanship. “We had many chances to score, but we failed to utilize them. I will never condone such behavior because, at the end of the day, football is also about discipline. People came from different provinces to witness the game, but their lives were put in danger. We let others see how divided we are in the Eastern Cape, and this incident really tarnishes our reputation as Bizana.”
Loyiso Ka Nomnongo Yalezo echoed Ncamani’s sentiments, calling for professionalism from match officials in future derbies. “I so wish the next derby would be handled professionally by match officials, so it’s easy to accept the results.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for sportsmanship, discipline, and respect in football. As the investigation into the violence continues, fans and officials alike must reflect on the importance of promoting a positive and respectful football culture.
