President Cyril Ramaphosa began a two-day oversight visit to the Eastern Cape today, focusing on strategic infrastructure development and enhancing coordination between national and provincial government.
Joined by Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa, the President undertook a guided tour of operations at the Port of Ngqura, South Africa’s newest deep-water port.
The delegation toured the Ngqura Container Terminal, a state-of-the-art transshipment hub that services maritime traffic from the Far East, South America, and across the African continent. As part of the tour, President Ramaphosa also boarded a tugboat named ORCA, which assists in guiding large vessels in and out of the port — a demonstration of the port’s operational capabilities and critical role in regional trade logistics.
Transnet leadership provided the President with a comprehensive update on ongoing projects and plans to improve efficiency at the port. The Ngqura Port is closely integrated with the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and is strategically positioned to attract investment and stimulate economic growth.
Tomorrow, 16 April 2025, the President and Cabinet members will meet with the Eastern Cape Executive at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to discuss service delivery improvements and strategic alignment under the District Development Model. The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen intergovernmental relations and ensure better outcomes for communities.
This visit marks the fifth such engagement between national and provincial leaders, following previous oversight missions to Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Gauteng.
