Siphosoxolo Myekethe, the sole suspect in the recent mass murders at Ngobozana village, has abandoned his bail application. He faces 18 counts of murder and possession of an unlicensed AK-47 rifle after allegedly killing 18 individuals across two homesteads.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reported that, at the time of the incident, Myekethe was on parole for a 2002 murder conviction, for which he had received a life sentence before his release in July 2023. He also served 18 months for escaping lawful custody while awaiting trial. The horrific events in Ngobozana village shocked the nation and garnered attention from high-profile figures such as South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane.
Prior to court proceedings, residents protested outside the Lusikisiki Magistrate Court, opposing Myekethe’s bail. Prosecutors emphasized the danger he presents to the community and the risk of flight given his history.
The court heard harrowing testimonies about the massacre, including accounts of five individuals injured during the attack. Eyewitnesses described the violence that unfolded, heightening the emotional intensity of the hearings.
In his defense, Myekethe’s legal representative from Legal Aid told the court that his client has decided to abandon his bail application. The magistrate ultimately decided to remand the case for further investigation, insisting on a comprehensive criminal profiling assessment of Myekethe. David King whose niece was killed in cold blood expressed his relief when the accused abandoned his bail application.  The court is expected to reconvene on November 26, 2024, as the Lusikisiki community continues to seek justice and accountability for this tragic event.
