Former Governor of the South African Reserve Bank and esteemed Labour and Finance Minister, Dr Tito Mboweni, has passed away at the age of 65, following a short illness. President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his deep sadness over the loss, offering heartfelt condolences to Dr. Mboweni’s family and friends.

Dr. Mboweni served as South Africa’s first Minister of Labour in the democratic government under President Nelson Mandela from 1994 to 1999. Following his tenure, he became Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, a position he held for a decade, making significant contributions to the country’s economic stability. From 2018 to 2021, he returned to public service as Minister of Finance under President Ramaphosa’s administration, where he emphasized fiscal discipline and economic transformation.

President Ramaphosa reflected on Dr. Mboweni’s legacy, describing him as a leader whose energy and affable nature touched the lives of many South Africans. “Given his sense of vitality and energetic and affable engagement with fellow South Africans, Dr. Mboweni’s passing at 65 comes as a shock,” Ramaphosa stated.

He highlighted Dr. Mboweni’s impact as an economic policy innovator and advocate for labor rights. In his various roles in government and the private sector, Mboweni was recognized for his commitment to economic transformation, fiscal responsibility, and his contributions on global platforms representing both South Africa and other developing economies.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Mboweni was known for his approachable demeanor, which earned him a significant following on social media. President Ramaphosa noted, “He conducted himself with expert rigour while maintaining the personable touch that made him a social media star and ambassador for Modjadjiskloof’s culinary traditions.”

President Ramaphosa concluded his message by acknowledging the immense loss felt by the nation and extended his hopes for Dr. Mboweni’s peaceful rest.
