UDM Appoints Zandile Phiri as Acting Secretary General

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has appointed Ms Zandile Phiri as its Acting Secretary General, effective immediately ¹. This decision follows the redeployment of former Secretary General, Mr Yongama Zigebe, who is now serving as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg ¹. Ms Phiri, previously the Deputy Secretary General, takes on the full-time, office-based role to ensure continuity in the party’s leadership structure.

Ms Phiri’s appointment comes at a significant time, as the UDM adjusts to changes in its leadership. Ms Thandi Nontenja’s recent appointment as a Member of Parliament, following the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, has also prompted this strategic move [1).

Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, UDM Deputy President and Leader in Parliament, expressed confidence in Ms Phiri’s abilities, describing her as “a capable and dedicated young woman” who will lead the party’s engine room with distinction [1).

As Acting Secretary General, Ms Phiri will play a crucial role in maintaining the party’s momentum and driving its vision forward. The UDM wishes her all the best in her new position.

Background on Ms Zandile Phiri

Ms Phiri has been actively involved with the UDM, previously serving as Deputy Secretary General ². Her experience and dedication to the party make her an ideal candidate for this critical role.
