As we stand on the threshold of a new era, with the 7th Parliament and administration assuming their roles, we are reminded of the immense responsibility that comes with serving our nation.
As representatives of the people, you are entrusted with shaping the future of our society, it is imperative that you address the pressing issues that affect the lives of our citizens, particularly the most vulnerable among us.
One such issue that demands urgent attention is the dire state of sanitation facilities in our public schools. Despite numerous commitments and deadlines year in, year out, thousands of schools still lack proper infrastructure in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and others, leaving our children to study in environments that pose serious health and safety risks. The existence of pit latrines in our schools is not just a matter of inadequate infrastructure; it is a violation of the basic rights and dignity of our youth.
I write to you today, not only as concerned leader in a political party, but also as a citizen and an advocate for the future of our nation’s children. The recent call to action by the United Democratic Movement and Nguvu Collective Change Leaders underscores the urgency of this matter.
Despite previous appeals and deadlines, the Department of Basic Education has failed to provide the necessary progress reports and timelines for the eradication of pit latrines.
This negligence cannot be tolerated. I urge you, esteemed members of the 7th Parliament and administration, to prioritise the eradication of pit latrines in our schools. It is imperative that Parliament and its Portfolio Committee for Basic Education hold the Minister and Department of Basic Education accountable for its promises and commitments.
In particular, we highlight the sixty-day period given to the Minister and the Department in February this year (2024) to report to Parliament and inform us as petitioners on the progress made in eradicating pit latrines. Regrettably, this deadline has come and gone without any tangible action or communication from the Ministry. Such inaction is not only a failure of governance but a betrayal of trust to the millions of children and families who continue to suffer due to the lack of proper sanitation facilities in our schools.
Furthermore, as you take your oath of office and affirmation, recognise that the persistence of poverty and unemployment exacerbates the challenges faced by our education system. Without access to basic necessities and opportunities for economic advancement, many families struggle to support their children’s education, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and inequality.
By addressing the issue of pit latrines in our schools, you will not only ensure the safety and well-being of our children but also invest in the future leaders of our nation. I call upon you to demonstrate unwavering commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of our children.
The time for action is now. Let us not allow bureaucratic inertia political expediency and corruption to hinder progress. Let us build a brighter future for all, starting with the safety and well-being of our children in their places of learning.
