The rate of unemployment in South Africa has had many young people lose hope however a few see this an opportunity to fend for themselves by venturing into business. Vuyiswa Bhani from Esirhasheni in ward twenty-three decided not to seat around and wait for opportunities to come to her, she sought after ways of making an income and making an income and knitting came naturally for her
Miss Bani started knitting using old wool jerseys she had asked from people. She later felt her skill was more developed and started buying wool, she then used to make bennies and anything a customer’s requests. Vuyiswa says she goes around asking for shoe soles and remake shoes using wool. She is a self-taught Crochet and she says she sometimes uses YouTube tutorials for new designs.
Bhani has since made shoes, hats, dresses, bags, and anything request by a client, Vuyiswa says she has received immense support the community and she now feels like she is also working because she is able to ends meat and take care of her family.
“I think I was born with the skill because no one really taught me how to knit I believe it’s a God given talent” Miss Bani says her challenge is not being able to pre-stock wool and sole for her start up business, she wishes to get funding that will allowing to have enough stock as this will allow business to flow at a quicker rate.
