In a sentencing that follows a guilty verdict for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Fundiswa Mathithibala, Orlando Pirates soccer player Thembinkosi Lorch faces a R100,000 fine.

The Randburg Magistrate’s Court handed down the sentence on Tuesday, after Lorch was found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in June.

Lorch received a three-year suspended sentence, provided he avoids a similar offense for five years. The court also ordered a R100,000 fine, half payable immediately and the rest in installments to the People Opposing Women Abuse NGO.

Lorch was also declared unfit to possess a firearm based on evidence and witness credibility issues.
