A 64-year-old suspect is set to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate Court on Monday, January 6, 2025, on charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. The arrest follows a tragic incident that took place on December 29, 2024, when the suspect allegedly shot a 35-year-old male victim in the stomach during an argument in the Hillcrest residential area.

The altercation, which escalated outside a homestead, resulted in the victim being rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Promptly alerted to the situation, members of the Madeira SAPS, in collaboration with the District Task Team, located and apprehended the suspect shortly after the incident.

During the arrest, police discovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol with ammunition, which had its serial number erased. This firearm is believed to be the weapon used in the fatal shooting. Ballistic testing will be conducted to confirm its connection to the crime.

The suspect is charged not only with murder but also with unlawful possession of both the firearm and the ammunition. Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner Brigadier Vukile Ntuli commended the police for their swift response, emphasizing the importance of delivering justice for the victim, as well as his family and friends.
