What happens when young people, traditional leaders, and government officials join forces to plan South Africa’s future?

That’s exactly what unfolded at the recent G20 Stakeholders Dialogue in Kokstad. Hosted at Esayidi TVET College by the KZN Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Harry Gwala District Municipality (HGDM), and Greater Kokstad Municipality (GKM), the dialogue focused on youth empowerment and inclusive governance ahead of the G20 Summit in November.
1. Raising Awareness About the G20
The first step was making sure communities understood why South Africa’s participation in the G20 matters. Speakers linked local priorities to international decision-making, showing how global policies impact everyday lives.
2. Bringing Leaders and Stakeholders Together
Key leaders, including HGDM Mayor Cllr Zamo Nxumalo, GKM Mayor Cllr L. Madikizela, District Deputy Mayor Cllr T. Jojozi, and Inkosi Fodo of uMzimkhulu, joined forces in Kokstad. Their presence demonstrated a united commitment to inclusive governance and grassroots engagement.
3. Empowering Youth Voices
Under the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”, young people were encouraged to speak up on the issues affecting their communities. Their contributions will form part of the recommendations submitted for the G20 Summit, ensuring youth perspectives guide national strategies.
4. Building Lasting Partnerships
The dialogue strengthened ties between municipalities, traditional leaders, and civil society groups. These partnerships aim to create long-term solutions for development and governance challenges across KwaZulu-Natal.
5. Shaping Recommendations for the G20 Summit
Insights from the event will be compiled and presented to South Africa’s G20 leadership team. The goal: to build “A nation that works for all” by ensuring community-driven solutions influence international policy discussions.
