the Eastern Cape Department of Education, in partnership with KFC, hosted a vibrant provincial mini-cricket festival at Dale College in King William’s Town. The event, held on 08 November 2025, brought together learners from four education districts — Joe Gqabi, Amathole West, Sarah Baartman, and Buffalo City Metro — to celebrate physical education and youth participation in sports.
What Happened?
The festival created a fun and energetic atmosphere as primary school learners showcased their cricket skills in friendly matches. The day was filled with cheers, laughter, and teamwork, as children enjoyed the spirit of sportsmanship.
The initiative aimed to promote Physical Education in schools and encourage active, healthy lifestyles among learners. It also gave teachers and coaches a platform to share best practices for integrating sport into the classroom environment.
Official Response
An official from the Eastern Cape Department of Education said the festival reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to developing well-rounded learners.
“We believe sport is a vital part of education. It builds discipline, teamwork, and confidence in our young people,” the official noted.
A KFC spokesperson also expressed pride in supporting grassroots cricket development:
“Our partnership with mini-cricket is about giving every child a chance to play, learn, and dream big,” they said.
Community Impact
Parents, educators, and community members applauded the initiative, saying it strengthens unity and promotes youth empowerment. Such events motivate learners to stay active and balanced between academics and physical health.
Local coaches said the festival helped spot emerging talent that could feed into provincial and national youth teams in the future.
