On 18 October 2025, the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Student Life and Co-Curricular Unit hosted its second annual Instructional Pride March in Buffalo City. Students, staff, and community partners first gathered at Buffalo City TVET College. They then marched to St Peter’s Park in Southernwood, carrying a united message of diversity, equality, and visibility across all campuses.
What Happened
Hundreds of students from all WSU campuses filled the streets in a colourful and empowering march. The event promoted inclusivity and acceptance within the university community. Under the theme “Pride is Equality, Pride is Excellence,” participants celebrated their identities and called for safe, affirming spaces for everyone.
Representatives from Student Health and Education (S.H.E) and other external allies joined the procession, showing solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community. “Today is about love, visibility, and respect, creating a university where everyone belongs,” said an organiser from the Student Life Unit.
Official Response
Bukho, crowned Ms Transgender BCC 2025, delivered an inspiring address on the importance of self-awareness and pride. “We must continue to love ourselves and uplift one another. Pride is not only a celebration it’s a statement that we all deserve equality and respect,” said Bukho.
University officials commended the students for leading positive change and reinforcing WSU’s commitment to human rights and inclusivity.
Community Impact
The march strengthened relationships between WSU and the wider Buffalo City community. Residents cheered as the procession passed, while participants described the event as both joyful and transformative. The initiative reaffirmed the university’s vision of building campuses where diversity is embraced and equality is lived daily.
