Their Story
The Cleaning Campaign, hosted by the Student Life & Co-Curricular Unit, brought students together with PETCO and the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality for a hands-on effort to clean up Komani.
The morning began with teams clearing three dumping sites across the town. Students moved with purpose, determined to show that when communities work side by side, real change takes shape. Their energy became a reminder that environmental care is not only a municipal duty it is a shared commitment.
The Event
After hours of dedicated work, participants gathered at the Grey Site for an educational session to deepen their environmental awareness.
WSU’s Occupational Health and Safety Manager, Yongama Cata, delivered an inspiring message on the importance of safety and service.
PETCO representative Palesa Somana then led a practical recycling lesson, teaching students about different types of plastics and paper, the benefits of recycling, and even how waste can become a source of income.
CRSC member Lonwabo Madikizela closed the session by encouraging students to continue recycling at home during the holidays, reinforcing that environmental action should not end with the event.
The presence of Health & Safety, RASA, landlords, PETCO, the SRC, and municipal partners added weight to the day’s goal working together to build cleaner, safer communities.
Community Reactions
The campaign sparked appreciation across the community, with residents acknowledging the students’ dedication and the message behind their efforts. The day was more than a cleanup it was a reminder that every person is part of the solution. When people show up, collaborate, and lead with intention, they create an impact that reaches beyond the campus.
