The  Walter Sisulu University Mthatha Campus Student Representative Council (CSRC), in collaboration with Student Governance Leadership and Development (SGLD) and led by student development practitioner Pumla Prudence Nikani-Maxwele, recently hosted a three-day Student Indaba aimed at fostering gender empowerment, leadership, and active student participation.

Held during a period of national reflection around National Women’s Day on 9 August, the event brought together students, campus leaders, and national figures for open discussions on pressing social and educational issues.

Key sessions included the Men’s Indaba, themed “Redefining Manhood: Building Responsible, Conscious and Empowered Men,” and the Women’s Indaba, “Women Rising: Empowerment, Safety and Leadership for a Better Tomorrow.”

Distinguished guests included Honarable. Mlibo Qhoboshiyane, Chair of the Public Participation, Petitions & Education Committee in the Eastern Cape Legislature; Honarable. Sibulele Ngongo, MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture; and Professor. R. Songca, WSU Vice-Chancellor.

On the final day, Prof. Songca engaged students in meaningful dialogue on internal campus matters, emphasizing unity, inclusivity, and forward-thinking leadership. He stated the importance of collective action, digital engagement, and open conversation across different perspectives to drive impactful change within the research community.
