The Butterworth Campus Faculty of Management and Public Administration Sciences held an emotional farewell for Prof Bulelwa Nguza-Mduba, the Executive Dean, after 27 years of service at Walter Sisulu University.
The event took place on campus with staff, students, family and close friends in attendance. Prof Nguza-Mduba was joined by her husband, senior university leaders and representatives from APSA, NEHAWU, the Institutional Forum and the Campus SRC.
Warm tributes from colleagues
Deputy Executive Dean, Prof Sanjay Balkaran, delivered the welcoming message.
He thanked Prof Nguza-Mduba for her years of dedication, mentorship and steady leadership.
“This is not goodbye,” he said. “We are here to honour the moments, lessons and experiences we shared with you.”
He described her as a leader who brings “a different shade” to the faculty, adding that even in difficult moments, “she disciplines with a smile.”
Balkaran praised her as a leader, facilitator and guide who shaped the direction of the faculty.
“On behalf of all staff, we wish you well on your new journey. We will continue to acknowledge and appreciate your contribution,” he said.
A legacy of unity and resilience
In her appreciation address, Prof Nguza-Mduba reflected on her long journey at Walter Sisulu University. She recalled the early challenges she faced, the growth of the faculty and the strong relationships built over the years.
She encouraged staff and students to uphold the ‘Legacy of Unity’, a value she said kept the faculty grounded through difficult periods.
“It is a bittersweet moment,” she said. “This has been an incredible journey filled with lessons, hardships and achievements. I am grateful for every step.”
Her message inspired many attendees, who described her as a steady force, a mentor and a source of encouragement.
Celebrating leadership and impact
The farewell captured the deep respect colleagues have for Prof Nguza-Mduba. Speakers noted her role in strengthening academic programmes, supporting young scholars and maintaining a culture of professionalism within the faculty.
Staff members said her leadership leaves a lasting impact on campus life. They added that her commitment to excellence will continue guiding the faculty long after her departure.
