The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality (WMMLM) has taken steps to strengthen service delivery through technology. The municipality hosted a GIS Open Day aimed at improving planning and long-term development.
What Happened
The event took place on 10 December 2025 at the Wild Coast in Ward 24. WMMLM partnered with the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, COGTA, and other stakeholders.
The Open Day focused on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The municipality used the platform to engage communities and review its GIS policy and strategy.
Purpose of the GIS Open Day
Officials said the Open Day aimed to educate and involve communities. It also supported collaboration between departments and stakeholders.
The session raised awareness about how spatial data can improve decision-making. It also allowed participants to provide input and learn about innovation in municipal planning.
Key Presentations
Various departments delivered presentations on their use of GIS. Ms Leigh Thomas from ESRI explained that GIS is more than a mapping tool.
She said GIS is a strategic asset that supports better decisions. It also helps streamline services and improve planning across government.
How GIS Improves Service Delivery
Officials stressed several benefits of GIS. These include better planning and resource allocation. GIS also improves operational efficiency and disaster response.
The system supports transparency and public participation. It also promotes digital inclusion within communities.
Call for Continued Engagement
Development Planning Senior Manager Ms Nobahle Mafumbatha welcomed the initiative. She suggested that similar workshops be held quarterly.
Mafumbatha said regular sessions would build knowledge within communities. She thanked departments for their commitment to improving people’s lives.
