The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality held a two-day awareness campaign to address Gender-Based Violence and Femicide. The programme focused on empowering women and children, as GBVF continues to harm families across the region.
The campaign took place from 8 to 9 December 2025. It gathered community members, local organisations, and municipal leaders.
Call for Stronger Local Forums
Councillor L. Makholosa urged councillors to strengthen ward-level forums. He said these structures must be ready to support survivors and guide them on reporting abuse.
According to him, early intervention can save lives and protect vulnerable families.
Women Receive Legal and Safety Training
Advocate O. Nodangala from the WMMLM Legal Services unit led a session focused on legal rights and reporting steps.
She was joined by other community partners who explained how neighbours and relatives can help protect children.
Speakers stressed the importance of keeping children safe from people they trust. In addition, they warned mothers to stop exposing children to harmful situations under the name of “love”.
Community Encouraged to Break the Silence
Facilitators said silence enables abuse. They encouraged residents to speak out, use local support systems, and work together to reduce violence.
The municipality plans to continue outreach across all wards to strengthen community action against GBVF.
