On 15 October 2025, the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality hosted a community prayer aimed at addressing the rising number of untimely deaths in Mgondini. The event, led by Council Speaker Councillor Z. Mhlwazi, brought together churches, traditional leadership, SAPS, and various government departments.
What Happened
The community of Mgondini gathered in unity for a spiritual intervention to tackle the ongoing concern over preventable deaths in the area. The prayer session, held on municipal grounds, saw collaboration from religious leaders, local authorities, and traditional representatives.

This initiative comes amid growing concern over social and health-related issues affecting residents. Stakeholders used the gathering as a platform to promote peace, wellness, and stronger social cohesion.
Official Response
Representing the South African Police Service (SAPS), Mr. Arnold Freemantle revealed the human side of law enforcement.
“We are here not only as police officers but as members of this community. I consider myself one of you, and I want to be part of the solution in making Mgondini a better place,” said Freemantle.
Councillor Msindo also expressed appreciation for the turnout and commitment shown by all involved
“I sincerely thank everyone who made time to attend this important prayer session. It means a lot to the community.”
