Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality opened a three-day ethical leadership workshop today at Elangeni Hotel, 2 December 2025. Councillors gathered to tackle governance risks and rebuild trust. The session placed integrity and accountability at the centre of municipal work.
What Happened
The workshop brought councillors together for focused discussions on ethical behaviour and day-to-day conduct in local government. Participants explored the pressures that weaken leadership and shared experiences from their wards.
“We need honesty at every level if we want our community to believe in us again,” one councillor said.
In addition, facilitators encouraged open reflection on issues that threaten clean governance, including weak controls and slow reporting lines.
Official Response
SALGA and the Special Investigating Unit joined the programme to signal firm support for ethical renewal. Their representatives outlined national standards and urged councillors to tighten internal processes.
“Ethics must guide every decision, not only big ones,” an SIU delegate told the room. “Councillors set the tone for how municipalities behave.”
WMMLM leaders described the workshop as an investment in preventing fraud, corruption and related risks.
Community Impact
Municipal officials said the training strengthens service delivery because ethical leadership improves confidence across Mbizana and nearby communities. Councillors also committed to act as public champions for clean governance.
“We stand ready to report wrongdoing early and protect our people,” a participant said as the session closed.
