The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality (WMMLM) partnered with Impact Africa and Lawula Investments to host a Voluntary Knowledge Sharing Session at the Mbizana Civic Centre. Themed “What if there is oil and gas in the Wild Coast? Could the province develop? Could marine life be affected?” — the gathering brought together community leaders, residents, and experts to deliberate on the possible social, economic, and environmental impacts of offshore oil and gas exploration.
Dr Ongama Mtimka from Impact Africa facilitated the programme, opening the floor with a prayer led by Pastor Qwebani, followed by a warm welcome from Cllr Mafumbatha, who expressed full support for the initiative, saying it was important for residents to understand the potential benefits and implications.
Local leaders echoed strong optimism for job creation. Chief Hlamandana of Esikhumbeni A/A (Ward 31) and chairperson of the traditional leaders’ council, praised the opportunity, stating that oil and gas exploration could significantly reduce unemployment in Bizana and, in turn, curb crime.
“Many crimes happen because there is no work. If this happens, young people will have hope and opportunities,” he said, urging unity in embracing development prospects.
Similarly, Mrs Jakula from Mbhobheni H Section welcomed the discussions, noting that high joblessness remains a pressing challenge. She said the potential for local employment could uplift families and the broader community.
According to background material shared at the session, the HCI Foundation, linked to Impact Africa, has invested over R53 million in Eastern Cape development projects since 2008, supporting education, sustainable food security, healthcare, and youth skills development.
While optimism was strong, the organisers stressed the importance of community input before any exploration activities proceed, highlighting the balance between economic growth and environmental stewardship for the Wild Coast’s future.
