Walter Sisulu Local Municipality Mayor Councilor Vania Davids has launched a Driver’s License Training Initiative targeting Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP) participants. The program, running over two to three weeks, offers both theoretical and practical driving lessons across all towns within the municipality.
What Happened?
The newly launched initiative will train EPWP participants to obtain both learner’s and driver’s licenses. The program combines classroom-based theory sessions with hands-on driving practice, ensuring participants gain the necessary confidence and competence.
Bookings will be arranged for learners to write their official tests and attend scheduled driving sessions. The training forms part of the municipality’s broader strategy to promote skills development and youth empowerment through practical, employment-linked initiatives.
Official Response
Mayor Vania Davids expressed her pride in the launch, emphasizing that the initiative is designed to open doors for young people seeking meaningful employment.
“The aim of this program is to give participants exposure to more opportunities, particularly those that require valid driver’s licenses,” said Mayor Davids.
She added that this project aligns with the municipality’s commitment to equipping youth with essential life skills that enhance employment and foster self-reliance.
Community Impact
The Driver’s License Training Initiative is expected to benefit dozens of EPWP participants, helping them qualify for jobs that demand licensed drivers — including positions in logistics, construction, and public service.
Residents have welcomed the program, noting that it addresses a key barrier to employment in rural areas: the lack of driving credentials.
