On Sunday, 13 November a mass funeral was held for the victims of Ndwedwe community who were shot at a spaza shop in KwaZulu–Natal last week. Five of the victims were laid to rest this past weekend.
It is alleged that several men randomly opened at the victims who were sitting on the veranda of a tuck-shop and fled the scene after the ordeal.
Four men died on the scene while three other men were rushed to hospital for medical assistance. One of the three men unfortunately died later that day at the hospital.
The Ndwedwe community are still uneasy and feel unsafe. They state that matriculates are unable to attend study sessions and extra classes because they are scared.
A resident that stays near the spaza shop where the shooting took place says whenever she looks at the spaza shop it feels as if the shooting will happen again.
“We are still scared” she says.
One of the residents advised that security personnel should be recruited to help the police services protect the community. He says there isn’t enough police officers in the area and assistance is needed for the safety of the residents of Ndwedwe.
No perpetrators have been arrested and are still on the run.
