Kwaito musician Doctor Goodwill Malinga shed tears as he relived his battle with the SA Revenue Service. Malinga, who was the guest on the popular podcast Mac G’s Podcast & chill, shared how SARS attached and auctioned off his assets. A few weeks ago, Malinga topped the trends after the news broke that he had failed to pay his tax bill and that the taxman had attached his belongings & intended to sell them to pay off the debt.

Speaking to MacG and Sol, the singer and producer revealed that after the Durban July in 2019, he paid R1 million of his R2.1 million debt. Thereafter, he would pay whatever amount he could. But, unfortunately for him, the COVID-19 pandemic hit which played a huge role in his financial woes as gigs ran dry. “In music, you depend on being called for your service,” he said, adding that he tried to reach out for help. “After two years, SARS came. I called Minister Nathi Mthethwa, we talked. I was calling people that I worked with, but they didn’t come to my rescue,” he said. According to Scolla, he was stripped of his furniture, music equipment and a bakkie combined total of R500 000 worth of movable assets.
Unfortunately Dr Malinga was not the first South African Musician with a similar story. In May 2022 The Afro-Soul singer, Zahara also revealed that she was facing financial problems and she almost host her home when Mzansi came to her rescue. She recently thanked South Africans for saving her house. “all the R50 notes helped,” she said. Dr Malinga touched the hearts of many fans on ‘Podcast & Chill’ when he broke down.
