Veteran NPA prosecutor Riegel Du Toit passes away

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has extended condolences following the passing of veteran prosecutor and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Deputy Director, Advocate Riegel Du Toit.

What Happened

Du Toit, who served in the NPA’s Gauteng division, died recently, according to a statement issued by the Department of Justice on Monday, 22 December 2025.

He was known for his pivotal role in prosecuting high-profile organised crime cases, including the murder of German car expert Uwe Gemballa and the prosecution of Czech crime boss Radovan Krejcir.

Due to threats against his life, Du Toit was once placed under protection after his name appeared on a hit list during a police raid on Krejcir’s property.

Official Response

Minister Kubayi described Du Toit as “a committed and respected public servant” and extended “heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire prosecutorial fraternity”.

The department added:

“Advocate Du Toit served the justice system with dedication and professionalism, contributing meaningfully to the work of the National Prosecuting Authority.”

Community Impact

While based in Gauteng, Du Toit’s legacy resonates across South Africa’s justice system, especially among prosecutors who worked on organised crime and high-risk cases. His passing marks a significant loss for legal professionals nationwide.
