The Umzimvubu Local Municipality, led by Mayor Councilor Zukiswa Ndevu, officially handed over a contractor for the Thwa access road project in Ward 15 on November 10, 2025. The project, measuring 4.8 km, aims to improve rural connectivity and create local job opportunities.
What Happened?
The municipality announced that Breaking Force Trading had been appointed to construct the Thwa road. The project is expected to ease mobility challenges for residents, especially during rainy seasons when roads become impassable.
Mayor Ndevu emphasized that the initiative forms part of Umzimvubu’s broader effort to upgrade rural infrastructure and ensure equitable development across all wards.
“As the Umzimvubu Municipality, we are here in Ward 15 to hand over the contractor for this road because we know how badly the condition of our roads affects our people, especially after heavy rains,” said Mayor Zukiswa Ndevu. “We want this road restored to a standard that allows safe and smooth travel.”
The project is expected to create around ten employment opportunities for local residents during its construction phase.
Official Response
Municipal officials reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to improving service delivery and supporting small to medium enterprises through local contracting.
They also emphasized that infrastructure development remains a key driver of economic growth and accessibility in rural areas, aligning with Umzimvubu’s long-term development strategy.
Community Impact
Residents of Thwa welcomed the development, describing it as a long-awaited response to years of deteriorating road conditions. For many, the new road will mean easier access to schools, clinics, and local markets.
