The Umzimvubu Local Municipality has recently celebrated a significant milestone with the construction of 362 new housing units in Cabazana, Ward 26. This initiative aims to improve the living conditions of residents, many of whom have endured years of hardship.
The latest beneficiary of this project is Mr. Sonwabo Mjayisa, a 70-year-old resident who has lived in a dilapidated mud house all his life. Mr. Mjayisa, who has three children currently seeking employment in the city, expressed profound gratitude upon receiving his new home.
“I have lived in the old house all my life and have experienced the worst weather conditions with rain and cold. I am so grateful for this new house; I do not have enough words to express my gratitude,” said Mr. Mjayisa. The previous structure was not only uncomfortable but also unsafe, with strong winds posing a constant threat of collapse.
The project, spearheaded by the Umzimvubu Local Municipality, is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life for destitute families. Municipal officials have been visiting recently completed projects to assess their impact and gather feedback from beneficiaries.
Asanda Njombini, a Ward Committee member, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Communities have been suffering under poor housing conditions. This project brings relief and the restoration of people’s dignity,” she said. Njombini also highlighted the employment opportunities the construction has provided for local youth, contributing to the economic upliftment of the area.
One such youth is Luthando Tshekele, a bricklayer who worked on Mr. Mjayisa’s house. “This opportunity has allowed me to afford things I couldn’t when I was sitting at home doing nothing. I am grateful for the chance to use my skills and make a difference in my community,” Tshekele remarked.
Neighbors like Novuyiso Jabavu have also noticed the positive changes brought about by the project. Jabavu, who lives in a house built with sticks and mud, shared her relief at seeing Mr. Mjayisa receive a new home. “When it rained, I often offered him shelter because his house leaked. It’s heartening to see these improvements not only for the families in need but also for our unemployed youth.”
The construction of these 362 units, undertaken by two appointed companies, marks an important step forward for Ward 26. The project signifies the Umzimvubu Local Municipality’s commitment to enhancing living conditions and providing economic opportunities for its residents.
