The Umzimvubu Local Municipality has begun installing 30 solar-powered streetlights in Ward 28, eMaxesibeni, in a project aimed at improving pedestrian safety and enhancing security in the area.

According to a media statement issued on Thursday, 22 streetlights have already been installed and are fully operational, with the remaining lights expected to be completed soon. The initiative forms part of the municipality’s broader commitment to infrastructure development and rural upliftment.

“Upon completion, this project will improve pedestrian visibility and personal security and enhance safety by allowing pedestrians and motorists to see each other at night. It will also contribute to the fight against crime, as many criminal activities occur after dark,” said Mayor Ndevu.

The project was announced during the State of the Municipality Address and Budget Speech, held at Sigundwaneni Village in Ward 10 on 29 May 2025.
