the Umzimvubu Local Municipality officially handed over three road construction projects to contractors on 05 November 2025. The projects, spread across Wards 6, 14, and 22, aim to improve access and boost development in rural communities.
What Happened
The municipality awarded three separate contracts to local construction companies to build and upgrade roads in selected wards.
- Hlubelihle Group will construct the 3 km Fadeni–Ngwetsheni Road in Ward 14, KwaBhaca, expected to be completed in six months.
- Sibukule Project will develop the 9.5 km Goodhope–Archie Road in Ward 22, Njijini, also over a six-month period.
- Intlangula Trading Enterprise will build the 4.1 km Mqhekezweni Road in Ward 6, eMaXesibeni, with a similar six-month timeline.
Each project is designed not only to improve transportation and accessibility but also to create employment for local youth.
Official Response
Municipal officials emphasized the importance of these infrastructure developments in enhancing service delivery and stimulating rural economies.
“These projects will connect our villages and open up opportunities for local businesses and residents. We are committed to ensuring that each project delivers both quality infrastructure and community upliftment,”said an Umzimvubu Municipality representative.
The municipality also emphasized that local labour will be prioritized during construction to reduce unemployment in the wards.
Community Impact
Residents have welcomed the projects, saying the new roads will ease transport challenges and improve access to schools, clinics, and markets. The developments are also expected to boost small-scale farming by making it easier to move goods to nearby towns.
Local youth expressed hope that the job opportunities from these projects will help them gain work experience and financial stability.
