What Happened
Umalusi has completed its national audit on the readiness of both public and private assessment bodies for the 2025 year-end examinations. The audit covered the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), and the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI).
Between 11 August and 9 October 2025, Umalusi reviewed registration systems, personnel training, exam centre security, and data processes. More than one million candidates will write exams at over 9,400 centres nationwide.
Official Response
Umalusi expressed confidence in the preparations. “We are satisfied that the measures in place will protect the integrity of the 2025 examinations,” the Council stated.
The DBE will manage the largest number of candidates ;766,543 full-time and 137,018 part-time. The DHET is finalising some data for N3 candidates, while IEB and SACAI have confirmed their readiness. Umalusi has approved all question papers and internal assessments after moderation.
Moreover, strong security measures are in place for printing, storage, and distribution. Personnel involved in invigilation and marking have been trained to ensure fair and transparent assessments.
Community Impact
The upcoming exams are a defining moment for learners across South Africa. Umalusi urged all assessment bodies to fix the remaining minor issues before the first paper is written.
Results will be released in January 2026, followed by the issuing of certificates within three months. The Council also wished the Class of 2025 “strength and determination” as they complete their schooling journey.
