The University of Fort Hare (UFH) has revealed plans for a new multi-million-rand Student Life Centre in East London’s central business district. The project, already in advanced stages of planning, is set to change the face of student life on the urban campus.
The facility will be a greenfield development, funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and will stand opposite the UFH Miriam Makeba Centre of Performing Arts. It is designed as a mixed-use space, combining academic, recreational, and commercial areas under one roof.
Currently, UFH’s East London satellite campus has no dedicated communal hub for students and staff. The new centre will fill that gap, providing spaces for study, collaboration, and social activities. Beyond serving the university, the project is expected to support urban renewal in the CBD, bringing new energy and opportunities to the area.
Once complete, the Student Life Centre will not only improve day-to-day student experiences but also contribute to the long-term development of the surrounding city.
