In a significant step towards improving the learning conditions for children in rural areas, the United Democratic Movement (UDM) has welcomed the recent budget votes for the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Infrastructure Development. These budget allocations are aimed at the eradication of pit latrines in schools, an initiative long championed by the UDM and other advocacy groups.
Yongama Zigebe, the Secretary General of the UDM and Nguvu Change Leader, expressed commendation for the budget votes and the announced collaborative efforts between the two departments. Zigebe emphasized that this initiative is crucial for enhancing the safety and dignity of thousands of children across the country.
“Before the 7th Administration took office, we wrote an open letter to Parliamentarians, urging them to prioritize the eradication of pit latrines in rural schools in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the North West,” said Zigebe. “As UDM and Nguvu Change leaders, we have been unwavering in this fight, recognizing the profound impact that inadequate sanitation has on the health, safety, and dignity of our children.”
Zigebe criticized the previous administration for failing to deliver a promised report to Parliament that would outline specific timelines for eliminating pit latrines. This inaction has left many children at risk, with their learning environments deemed potential death traps due to inadequate sanitation facilities.
However, Zigebe noted that the commitment shown by the ministers in the 7th Administration brings a renewed sense of hope. He urged the ministers to move beyond political rhetoric and deliver on their promises, stressing that the eradication of pit latrines is not just a matter of policy but a moral and constitutional obligation.
We must ensure that all learners and teachers can operate in a safe and dignified environment, free from the hazards posed by inadequate sanitation,” Zigebe stated. “This is a critical step towards fulfilling our constitutional mandate of providing proper dignity to our people.
In a further commitment to the cause, Zigebe announced that on 29 July 2024, the UDM will actively participate in a stakeholder engagement organized by the Human Rights Commission in Emalahleni. This engagement signifies the UDM’s ongoing dedication to working with all stakeholders to make the eradication of pit latrines a reality.
Zigebe called on all members of society, including parents, educators, and community leaders, to join in the fight.
Together, we can hold our leaders accountable and ensure that our children have the safe, dignified learning environments they deserve. The time for action is now, and we will not rest until every pit latrine is replaced with safe and hygienic facilities.
