On 22 October 2025, the United Democratic Movement (UDM) raised alarm over the escalating gun violence in Johannesburg, particularly in Westbury and Alexandra. The party urged government and law enforcement to restore public safety and rebuild community trust amid rising gang-related killings.
What Happened
The UDM issued a strong statement following a series of shootings that have left families grieving and residents living in fear. In Westbury, two teenagers were recently killed, while four others were injured in a suspected gang-related attack. Similar incidents in Alexandra have turned townships into what the UDM described as “war zones.”
The statement, released by Councillor Yongama Zigebe, Chairperson of the City of Johannesburg’s Committee on Gender, Youth, and People with Disabilities, said the violence shows the government’s failure to control illegal firearms and dismantle gangs.
Official Response
“The United Democratic Movement is outraged by the surge of gun violence that continues to claim innocent lives, Johannesburg residents are living in fear because the state has failed to protect them. This must end now,” said Zigebe.
The UDM called for an immediate crackdown on illegal guns and stronger community policing. The party also urged the National Police Commissioner to step in. It said trust in law enforcement must be rebuilt and young people must be protected from gangs.
Community Impact
Communities across Johannesburg say they are overwhelmed by the ongoing violence. Parents fear for their children’s safety as gunfire becomes a daily occurrence in parts of the city. Residents have echoed the UDM’s call for visible policing and effective gang prevention strategies to reclaim their neighbourhoods from crime.
