
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of two additional suspects in connection with the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, who was shot and killed at his home in Mpophomeni, Howick, in December 2023.
Among the arrested is a 56-year-old traditional leader (Inkosi) and a 26-year-old suspect accused of coordinating the assassination from inside Pietermaritzburg Prison. SAPS said both suspects were apprehended by the Political Killings Task Team on Wednesday, 30 July 2025.
The pair are expected to appear before the Howick Magistrates Court on Thursday, 31 July 2025. They will be joining two other suspects previously arrested and charged in connection with the murder.
Charges against the suspects include conspiracy to commit murder, murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Councillor Ndlovu, who served under the Umgeni Local Municipality at the time of his death, was a prominent member of the Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal. His murder sent shockwaves through the local political landscape and prompted an intensive investigation by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team.
Police investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to uncover the full circumstances behind the politically motivated killing.
