Two Limpopo police officers died in a murder-suicide at the Ritavi Police Station after a domestic dispute escalated inside the community service centre on 08 December 2025. This horrible event leaves questions concerning the safety of police officers across the province.
What Happened?
Police say Sergeant Ngoveni Matimba Gift (40) went to the home of Constable Machete Tlhonologatso (31). After an argument, colleagues escorted Constable Tlhonologatso to the station for safety.
However, Sergeant Gift arrived at the station, confronted her inside the service center, and fatally shot her before turning the gun on himself. Both officers died at the scene.
Official Response
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said the incident was deeply shocking and saddening, especially as it occurred during the national 16 Days of Activism campaign.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has opened a murder case and an inquest. Investigators are gathering statements and reviewing CCTV footage.
Community Impact
Residents in the Mopani District say the tragedy requires the urgent need to strengthen support systems for victims of domestic violence, including those within law enforcement structures.
Local organisations have called for intensified psychosocial support for officers and families affected by workplace-linked domestic abuse.
