Tavern owner among four nabbed for double murder in Bityi

Libode, Eastern Cape – A swift response by police led to the arrest of two suspects linked to a brazen business robbery in Libode’s CBD during the early hours of Saturday, 23 November 2024.

At approximately 01:30, a group of around 10 men armed with high-caliber rifles stormed a business establishment using two bakkies. They forcefully gained access to the premises and stole two safes containing an undisclosed amount of money.

During the incident, a police patrol van was ambushed and fired upon, leaving two officers injured. The wounded officials were rushed to Mthatha Hospital for medical attention.

Following the attack, police from the Tactical Response Team launched an intensive search for the suspects. Acting on gathered intelligence, officers raided a homestead in the Ntlaza locality, where they apprehended two suspects.

A 38-year-old man was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and ammunition and was arrested for violating the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. A 25-year-old suspect was also found with a 9mm pistol and ammunition and later linked to the robbery through ongoing investigations. He faces charges of business robbery, attempted murder, and the attack on police officers.

Both suspects are set to appear at the Libode Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 November 2024. Police have indicated that further arrests are expected as investigations continue.

This operation underscores law enforcement’s determination to combat violent crime and protect the community from organized criminal activity.
