OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Norman Modishana has welcomed the role of community members in the arrest of two suspects found with unlicensed firearms in Slovo Park, Mthatha.
The suspects, a 19-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man, were arrested on Tuesday, 06 January 2026 after a tip-off led police to a silver Toyota Corolla reportedly carrying armed occupants.
What Happened
Members of Mthatha Crime Prevention were alerted to the presence of firearms in the Slovo Park area. When police approached the vehicle, four individuals fled in different directions. Officers managed to arrest two.
- The 19-year-old female was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with one live round. Police confirmed the firearm was linked to a 2018 carjacking in Carletonville.
- The 34-year-old male suspect was also found with a 9mm firearm bearing a serial number.
Police have opened a case for possession of unlicensed firearms. The suspects will appear before the Mthatha Magistrate’s court soon.
Official Response
Major General Modishana praised the quick community response and encouraged continued cooperation between residents and SAPS.
“Community involvement in fighting crime is highly appreciated,” said Modishana.
The firearms will undergo ballistic testing to check for links to other crimes.
Community Impact
This arrest follows a pattern of increased cooperation between SAPS and residents in the OR Tambo District, where illegal firearms continue to pose a serious public safety risk.
