The King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Public Safety Department has made a major breakthrough in the fight against copper cable theft and corruption after arresting two suspects in the early hours of Friday morning.
The arrests took place around 05:00 in the village of Emaweleni, just outside the Mthatha CBD. The suspects, both foreign nationals aged 38 and 25, were found transporting five large sacks of copper weighing about 150,000 kilograms in their vehicle.
During the arrest, the suspects allegedly tried to bribe law enforcement officers with R10,000 in cash. The money was seized and booked as evidence. Later the same morning, a third individual believed to be the mastermind behind the operation, went to the police station and allegedly attempted to bribe officials with an additional R3,000 to secure the release of the suspects.
Authorities say the bold attempt to interfere with justice has only strengthened the case against the accused. They remain in custody while investigations continue, and further charges relating to bribery and organised crime are expected.
The KSD Municipality condemned the criminal activity and praised law enforcement for acting with integrity.
“This incident shows our firm commitment to fighting crime and corruption in our communities,” the municipality said.
Residents have been urged to report illegal activities, especially cable theft, which disrupts services and impacts communities directly. Reports can be made at 047 495 1037, a 24/7 hotline.
The municipality has vowed to continue cracking down on criminal networks that threaten the safety, economy, and infrastructure of Mthatha and surrounding areas.
