On 21 October 2025, the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality’s traffic officers launched a speed enforcement operation along the R6 in eDikeni, issuing ten citations. The three-hour operation, from 07:00 to 10:00, aimed to curb speeding and promote road safety among motorists in the area.
What Happened?
The targeted operation took place on one of the municipality’s busiest routes, where speeding has become a persistent problem. Traffic officials recorded several motorists driving well above the 60 km/h limit, with one driver clocked at 85 km/h, exceeding the limit by 25 km/h.
This alarming pattern of non-compliance has raised concerns about road safety risks to other drivers and pedestrians. Officers not only issued fines but also used the opportunity to educate motorists on the dangers of speeding and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations.
Official Response
Raymond Mhlaba traffic authorities said the initiative forms part of a wider campaign to reduce road accidents across the municipality.
“Speeding remains one of the leading causes of serious crashes in our region. Our officers will continue with similar operations to protect lives and ensure compliance with traffic laws,”a municipal spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added that more enforcement operations will be rolled out during peak travel periods and public holidays to discourage reckless behavior.
Community Impact
Local residents have welcomed the crackdown, noting that speeding has long been a danger on the R6, especially during school hours and market days.
Many motorists also acknowledged that such visible enforcement serves as an important reminder of road discipline and accountability.
