On the 4th of March 2023, traditional leaders will converge at Komjekejeke Heritage Site in the Ndebele Kingdom. The commemoration is in respect of the legendary king of amaNdebele, Silamba, who played a meaningful role in preserving the culture and heritage of the Ndebele nation.
Chairperson of the Alfred Nzo Local House of Traditional Leaders, Nkosi Jongilanga Sigcau, will lead a delegation of Traditional Leaders from the Mpondo Kingdom to attend this event. The renowned opera singer, Jamakazi from Lusikisiki and the poet, Novizicelo from Ntabankulu are said to be part of the event’s live performances.
A partnership on cultural exchange between the Mpondo and Ndebele nations was established back in 2008. The two nations have since supported each other on cultural activities held. In the year 2022, during the Heritage Month, September, Nkosi Thomas Mabhena led a delegation of 100 people, including Chiefs, Reed maidens and traditional dancers to attend the Mpondo Culture and Heritage Festival and Mpondo Reed Dance which was held at the Lwandlolubomvu Great Place. The Festival has been held annually since 2006.
The Mayor of Winnie Madikizela Mandela, Daniswa Mafumbatha, will honour the commemoration of King Silamba by attending and is expected to deliver a message of support on behalf of the Winnie Madikizela Mandela Municipality. This is in hopes to enhance relations with the local municipality by establishing strategic partnerships.
Events in the same nature as the King Silamba commemoration, are some of the activities that traditional leaders initiate to preserve the culture, history and heritage of their nations whilst also playing an active role in uplifting their communities. These events honour the role Traditional players played in in colonial resistance and in the struggle for liberation. The events also promote cultural tourism and contribute to the local economy. They also provide and bring forth unity amongst Traditional Leaders and encourage strategic partnerships.
Nkosi Jongilanga Sigcau, during his speech at the King Mampuru commemoration that was held on the 28th of January 2023 in Mamone, Limpopo, emphasized on the importance of Traditional Leaders working together because it played a significant, proactive and progressive role in making a difference in the lives and livelihoods of their communities. Nkosi Jongilanga Sigcau also mentioned that this also helped preserve the history, culture and heritage. He encouraged the government and the business sector to support these initiatives and to work with traditional leaders for the betterment of its people.
